Geography
At Althorpe and Keadby Primary, we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world and enable our children to recognise the importance of this within their own lives and communities. We believe that by understanding the world on a wider level and investigating different areas in depth, children will learn vital knowledge about being a respectful citizen.
Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The Geography curriculum at Althorpe and Keadby enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills which are built upon each year.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure that teaching equips pupils with knowledge about both diverse and local places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Providing them with fieldwork opportunities, children will experience a range of localities, allowing them to compare and contrast with their immediate area.
As pupils progress through the school, their growing knowledge about the world helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction and connection between physical and human processes and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

In the EYFS, children begin to develop their geographical knowledge by exploring the features of our school and nursery. In our school, the immediate local area and our school grounds (including our woodland) are at the heart of our geography curriculum. We encourage our children to respect and care for the natural environment, with rich opportunities to make use of the school grounds to enhance and apply their skills as geographers, including hands-on exploration of natural materials.
Maps and stories are used to investigate different places as we begin to compare and contrast different environments. Throughout the year, children observe and discuss the weather and seasonal changes. Children also learn about the different jobs which people do in our community.
We seek to inspire in our children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, which will remain with them for the rest of their lives - equipping them well for further education and beyond, providing them with the first hand experiences to do so where possible.

First hand experience, investigation and fieldwork is a vital part of our Geography curriculum at Althorpe and Keadby Primary School. We have recently outlined a specific progression document for this to further support our Long term curriculum.
