Design and Technology
At Althorpe and Keadby Primary School, we believe that in our ever-changing technological world, DT should inspire children to think creatively and become practical problem solvers. They will develop creative, technical and practical expertise through well planned projects which require them to design, make and evaluate their own purposeful products.
Our children will have opportunities to explore mechanical, textile and food products as well as looking at the importance of structural design.

We have planned the skills for this subject to ensure, children will be taught to others learn valuable mechanical, cutting, joining, sewing and cookery knowledge , using tools, materials and produce that might be unfamiliar to them. We believe all children can achieve in DT, through a broad and balanced curriculum, which builds well on skills learned previously. Where possible, links will be made with other STEM subjects through high quality and engaging lesson planning and hands on practical experiences. At Althorpe and Keadby Primary School, we aim to raise aspirations through meeting engineers, discovering STEM careers and promoting a love for STEM subjects.

There are so many adventures to be had through the Design Technology curriculum and we have been sure to plan in many of our adventure pledges into this subject. Through this subject children will have the opportunity to explore and evaluate ingredients, dishes, tastes and traditional cooking practices from around the world and take the opportunity to design, prepare and serve healthy meals for those within our community and they will learn prepare meals both within the kitchen and over the campfire during their time with us. However, we want healthy nutritious food preparation to be part of our children’s everyday.

We want to inspire our children to be the best that they can be and lead healthy lives both now and for the rest of their lives, and so you will also find pupil led snack stations within each of our classrooms. Here children hone their grating, peeling and cutting skills daily while being exposed to a wide variety of healthy snack options. They also have the opportunity to prepare staple foods such as porridge and toast with independence.
Within forest school children will also have the opportunity to explore a wider range of tools and explore joining and designing on a much larger scale and designing with natural materials while considering their environmental impact.
